If Your Kid Eats This Book, Everything Will Still Be Okay
How to Know if Your Child’s Injury or Illness is Really an Emergency
by Lara Zibners, MD
Everyone who has ever been pregnant, has probably read one of the MANY, MANY parenting books out on the market. They will guide you (sometimes whether they should or should not), and assist you down the avenues being a parent will take you, feeding you information about any problem you can possibly conceive. Can’t get your baby to sleep through the night? Pick up a book…or two…or three. Is it normal for them to insert crazy kid behavior here? Pick up a book. Can I feed my child this? Yep, you can probably find it in a book somewhere. Disciplinary issues? Try this book. That is the one thing different for our generation. We’ve become the parents that actually do have an instruction manual (or several) for raising our children. This is not always a good thing, mind you, but that is for an entirely different post!
Many of these books claim to be complete and comprehensive finds, placing everything that a new parent could possibly need within reach of your fingertips. However, as comprehensive as these guidebooks claim to be, they almost always skimp on the information in one area or another, otherwise they would all be 4000+ page, jumbo reference books that would need the skill of two strong manly men to lift. The one area that seems to be skimped over the most, possibly because there is just too much information to even attempt to include, is the section on children’s health and injuries. That’s where Dr. Lara Zibners’ book steps in.
Dr. Zibners is an emergency room pediatrician, and has used her own knowledge and experiences to give us this easy to read, humorous, and highly informative guide including close to any injury or illness you can imagine that our children will or can obtain. From common problems from colic and night terrors or others like what to do if you kid shoves a battery up his nose(or in any other orifice) to rashes, insect bites, funny odors, and even electric shock and poisonings, this book will help parents determine what is really worth the three hour wait in the ER waiting room and what can wait until morning with your regular pediatrician. You will be surprised at some of the things that are not as urgent as most parents assume. I’m glad that I can now add this book to my shelf for a quick reference if necessary and I would recommend it to any parent with small children.
